Biography

Canadian Flag
Lemuel has Canadian roots.

Lemuel was born on December 22, 1827, at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia County. He was the son of Charles Born and Maria Schmidt. His siblings were Charles Godfried, William Reginald, Christian, Maria Elizabeth, Anna Maria and Rebecca.

Lemuel left Lunenburg with his brother William Reginald in 1852 to participate in the gold rush in the Bendigo-Ballarat area of the Colony of Victoria, Australia, after gold was discovered there in 1851.

Lemuel married Jane Thompson at Tamworth, Colony of New South Wales, on the 8th of July 1856, at age 28, and had a large family. Jane's surname has also been recorded as Lee - see Jane Thompson [1]

The following was provided by Gloria Wheatly of New Zealand on November 2016:

"My 2 x great grandfather is Lemuel Burns born 22nd December 1827 in Lunenburg. He emigrated to Australia ca. 1853 chasing the Australian gold rush and died at Bathurst, New South Wales in 1887. Lemuel is the progenitor of a large family in Australia, now into its sixth generation. He and his wife had nine children:

  1. William Henry 1857-1934. b. Maitland. (Father listed as James)
  2. George Joseph 1858-1946. b. Tambaroora.
  3. Maria [Mrs. Robrahn] 1861-1920. b. Tambaroora.
  4. Charles 1864-1866. b. Tambaroora.
  5. Mary Catherine [Mrs. Lewis] 1866-1935. b. Tambaroora. (Father listed as Henry)
  6. Elizabeth Jane [Mrs. McCulloch] 1868-1933. b. Tambaroora.
  7. John Charles 1872-1873. b. Tambaroora. (Father listed as Samuel)
  8. Frederick 1873-1924. b. Tambaroora.
  9. Laura 1878-1955. b. Tambaroora. (Father listed as Samuel)

His brother William Reginald Burns, born 20th April 1832, also made the trip in 1852 from Halifax to Victoria, Australia, eventually heading to the goldfields in New Zealand where he died aged 76 years on 4 August 1908."

On February 8, 2017 Gloria Wheatly also wrote: "Reference was made to a book “The Hill End Story” In book 1, pg 156 it indicates Lemuel Burns came from Nova Scotia, Canada via the California fields (gold fields) leaving San Fransisco on October 24, 1853 on board the barque Envelope, 420 tons, and Arriving at Sydney Australia December 29, 1853."

Lemuel passed away in 1887, at Bathurst, Colony of New South Wales. "Burns.- In loving memory of my dear father Lemuel Burns, who departed this life 25th August, 1887 at his residence, The Manse, Milltown, Bathurst, aged 62. Inserted by his loving daughter Kate." The Evening News (Sydney): Mon., 26 Aug 1889.
