John Burns Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A204433.

John was born on 12 March 1740 in North Carolina.[1] He was the son of John Henrich Burns and Sheba Burns. [2] It's likely that his parents landed at the port of Brunswick when arriving from Scotland and settled somewhere in the nearby area. At the time, only twelve counties, all coastal or near the coast, existed. [3]

In 1771 John (age about 30) was living in the newly-created Chatham County, North Carolina. [4] [5]

John was a member of the American delegation to accept the surrender terms of loyalists and was an overseer of roads during the war. He also assisted in the detention of the detested Tory Colonel Fanning.[6]

In July 1779 John received a land grant in Chatham, North Carolina, USA for his Revolutionary War service [7] [8] [9]

In November of that same year, a man named Zachariah Harman bought land adjacent to his.[10] In March of the following year, the state of North Carolina either granted or sold him 640 acres, [11] and in 1784 he sold or gave 200 acres to his son William [12] and purchased 20 acres from Moses Terrell. [13] John continued to conduct land transactions until 1800, including selling or giving land to his sons William, James and Thomas. His transactions can be found in Deed Books D through M [14] In September of 1800 the state of North Carolina either granted or sold 100 acres to John in Chatham County. [15]

In the 1790 census John (age 50) was living in Chatham, North Carolina, United States.[16]

In the 1800 census John (age 60) was living in Hillsborough, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA.[17]

In the 1810 census John (age 70) was living in Chatham, North Carolina, United States.[18]

John died at the age of 71 on about 22 May 1811 in Chatham County, North Carolina, USA.[19] [20]
