Robert Kyle Burns, Jr., was born 8 June 1925 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a cultural anthropologist, who earned his undergraduate degree at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He started graduate study at Columbia University and eventually won tenure at the University of Michigan after joining that faculty in 1963. He married Lyla Smith Tupper, and the couple raised two sons. He died 23 October 2001.
