Biography

Anna was born before 1835. She passed away in 1902.

The following biography is from "Hillside Farm",by R.R. Potter (source below):

BURN, ANNA MARIA, (1829-1902) - Maria Burn was born in Lunenburg, N.S. on November 13, 1829. She was the fourth child of Charles Frederik and Maria (Schmidt) Burn. Charles Frederik was the son of Christian and Anna Maria (Maxner) Burn and a grandson of Johann Martin and Anna Barbra Born, two of the first settlers in the town of Lunenburg. According to Bell, 1960, pp482-83, Martin Born was the younger partner with a Christian Metzler in a tannery in 1754. Metzler was 26 at the time. The tannery was "on the shore by the brook at the head of Lunenburg harbour". On page 287 he also states that the Born family were originally from the Palatinate in southwestern Germany. Des Brisay, 1895, pp41-2, also mentions that a Mrs. Christian Born operated one of the first stores in Lunenburg. It consisted of a trunk, " being made of heavy planks.....and having iron hinges of great strength and a massive German lock". It was kept "in a log house built by him (Martin Born) nearly opposite the site of the Presbyterian church. The trunk was a depository for calicoes, ribbons, needles and other goods supplied by Mrs. Born's sisters, residing in Halifax.

On February 6, 1851 Anna Maria Burn married Captain William Young (Wilhelm Heinrich Jung), son of Johannes and Sarah Ann Catherine (Schneer) Jung. The couple had four children: Mary Elizabeth, John William, John Godfried and John.

The following is a description of the death of Anna Maria (Burn) Young which appeared in the Halifax Chronicle on Monday, July 14, 1902. " One of the most beloved women of this community died at her home, Hillside Farm, this morning (July 10), at 7 o"clock in the 74th year of her age, closely followed the death of her husband, Captain William Young, which took place only ten days ago. Mrs. Young, whose maiden name was Burn, was one of the three surviving members of that large family. Mrs. William Dauphinee of this town, a sister, and William Burn living in New Zealand, a brother, are the only living members. She lived her married life of 51 years in the house at which she passed away. [1] She was well known throughout the County and beloved by all who knew her. Her lovely personality, kind heartedness, Christian charity and open-hearted generosity to those in need testify to the Christian spirit and charity ever dwelling in her great heart. She leaves a son (John William Young) and a daughter (Mary Elizabeth (Young) Hyson) to mourn a kind and loving mother, and a host of sorrowing friends who know of the world to be poorer in the loss of this noble woman who was one of the salt of the earth indeed".

Anna Maria (Burn) Young is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg, beside her husband and sister-in- law, Sarah Young.

Research Notes

Maria's name was pronounced with a long "i" and she was known to correct people on occasion according to her daughter-in-law Mary Anderson (Burns) Young, as passed down to her daughter, Mildred Anderson (Young) Potter.
