Biography

Susan Elizabeth Burnside was born in November 15, 1858. According to her obituary her mother died when she was about a year old. However, her mother, Mary Eleanor Kelley, is shown on the 1860 US Federal census in August, with her father and brother, making Susan almost 2 years old. Her mother would have died sometime after the Census. The census also states Mary was born in Missouri in about 1831. Susan’s father was Asberry Burnside. He was a soldier in the Civil War and died in Tennessee in the Memphis General Hospital leaving Susan and her brother orphans at ages of 5 and 7, respectfully. Susan’s obituary states she was first cared for by an aunt which could be either Jane Burnside Bryan or Sarah Francis Burnside Mayfield. According to probate records for Asberry Burnside dated October 1, 1866, legal guardians were appointed by the courts to care for Susan and her brother, William. Susan’s appointed guardian was Wilkerson Keeton (alt. spelling Keyton). William’s appointed guardian was their grandfather, Archibald Burnside, captain in the Miami, Missouri home guards. The 1870 US Federal Census shows Susan living in the home of Wilkerson Keeton with his wife, Polly, and daughter, Sally (Sarah Louise Keeton). Others in the home included Joseph Leisure, his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Mary; Robt Ervin; John Leisure; John Gilbertson; and Alex Burnside (age 35, younger brother of Asberry and Susan’s uncle; listed as a school teacher). On June 14, 1869, Wilkerson Keeton was appointed as a new guardian for William Burnside for reasons unknown. On the 1870 Census, William is still shown living with his grandfather. Susan married Winfield Scott Irvin on December 31, 1870. They had eight children. At some point between 1910 and 1920, the family moved to Mills County, Iowa. She died at the home of her daughter, Dollie Salmons, on October 26, 1940. She is buried in the Malvern Cemetery, Malvern, Iowa.
