Biography

[REVIEW NOTES]
John Burnside - Son of Robert & Esther Mayes

Discrepancy

No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure .

Robert Burnside's children widely reported to be born in Virginia. However, in at least two instances the records show son John born Ireland. There are Many "same names" in VA records; However, Martha Burnside Jordan, ( John's youngest child), appears to have lived long enough to be in the 1880 census -- Father's birth country shows "Ireland" . Secondly, John is reported to have been of "foreign birth" in his son, Alexander Burnside's, death record in 1875. This is an issue that deserves more investigation. See Notes for further detail

Name Variation - Burnside, Burnsides. No reference of Byrnside, although this used by descendants.

Date Guess Theory

  1. Birth Date [1] No date listed for Robert's marriage (only estimated based on Selected Irish Marriages 1600-1900) - their birth dates were shown as 1717 & 1721) (These May, in fact, be much earlier).
  2. Burnside Family immigrated in 1730; probably after Robert's marriage (1737) and birth location for children is VA vs Ireland. No original source for immigration other than histories with variable dates.[2] It is unknown who was oldest - Robert or John.
  3. No court records (except Delinquents) prior to Clendenning Will in 1749 (but (son) James appears to be at about age 18+ (No reference to "minor". if so, this would put birth possibly at 1731); He (James) does not appear again until the Tax List in 1755.
  4. James as Robert's step-son[1] vs biological; [2] probably erroneous and should be biological as last name referenced was "Burnside" (a possibility exists of a James as younger brother of Robert, but no original source or additional references to confirm have been found.)
  5. Robert supposedly killed by Indians in 1742[1] vs 1746; [2] (Excerpt from Augusta (1746); however, Robert does not appear on the "Delinquent Rolls" until 1748. Chalkey's V2 p.413[3] (six years later from 1742). Probable death 1743-1746 (Children Births should be between 1737 to 1745.)

The Burnside Family (Brothers Robert and John) came to VA from County Tyrone, Ireland 1730-1740 and were among the First Settlers of Augusta County VA.

John Burnside, son of Robert Burnside and Esther Mayse, was born about 1735-1740. His father died about 1742 and his mother remarried. John went to live with his Uncle (John), and subsequently was named in his Uncle's will.

John was married about (1775-1778) to Mary Walker. No marriage record has been found to prove Mary's last name, although it is widely accepted she was the daughter of Alexander Walker and Elizabeth Patterson.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Burnside-645 and Burnside-49 appear to represent the same person because: Missed the match when I created the profile due to the uncertainty surrounding this man. It is certainly the same man. Sorry about making the duplicate!
