Biography

Bertie O. Burr was born August 6, 1872 at Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska. Her father was Carlos C. Burr, an attorney who served as Mayor of Lincoln and was a State Senator; her mother was Mary (Mollie) Smith Burr.[1][2]

Bertie married Beman G. Dawes at Lincoln on October 3, 1894. Beman was 24 years of age and estimated birth year is 1870. Other people in the record are C. C. Burr, Rufus R. Dawes and Mary Gates. [3][4]

In 1910 Bertie and Beman were living in Muskingum, Washington County, Ohio. Her husband was in the oil and gas business. Five children are listed in the census: Gates B. age 14 born in Nebraska, Dorothy age 12 born in Ohio, Carlos B. age 8 born in Ohio, Cutler E. age 6 born in Ohio, Henry M. age 4 born in Washington. There were two servants living with the family: Laura Ash age 24 from West Virginia and Lillie Harris age 20 from Ohio.[5]

The Dawes family lived on 846 East Broad Street in Columbus, Ohio at the time of the 1930 census. Beman is Chairman of the Board of an Oil Company. There was only one child still living with the couple, Henry who is a single man, aged 24, born in the District of Columbia, and working for the Federal Government.[6]

Around 1918 Beman and Bertie purchased 140 acres of farmland in Licking Township, Ohio. They built a brick farmhouse that became their country home and a place to enjoy their horticultural interests. It was there in 1929 that Bertie helped her husband establish the Dawes Arboretum. It was a place "To encourage the planting of forest and ornamental trees... to give pleasure to the public and education to the youth." Beman and Bertie established an endowment fund to support the arboretum which is located in rural Newark, Licking, Ohio.[1]

Bertie was not educated as a naturalist, but rather was self-taught. Enjoyment for her came from several sources including gardening, fishing, shell and butterfly collecting, bird watching and photography.[1]

Beman and Bertie had 4 sons and a daughter who later became founding Trustees of the Dawes Arboretum.[1][5]

Bertie (Burr) Gates died February 8, 1958. She was buried at the Dawes Arboretum Mausoleum and Cemetery near Newark, Licking County, Ohio.[1][2]
