DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cuthbert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cuthbert:

In the 1990s. with the Burrrell Society of California, I worked with genealogist Maureen Howes, Borderline Family Historian of Morpeth, England. Here are a few of those facts. 1) Cuthbert came into the tenancy of Roses Bower, Simonburn parish, after the death of Thomas, Thomas's wife was Dorothy, established at her 1807 death, age 90,as "widow of Thomas", She had one daughter, Jane, buried. 22 May 1789 at Simonburn. Cuthbert also held the tenancy of Shieldcrag, also called Cragshield. Chronological events, 1734-1753 (from these sources: Simonburn OPR microfiche transcript; Some original SImonburn records; Cuthbert Burrell's marriage Bond, 1734; Tenancy Rate Books for Rosesbower, from 1746; Tynedale Land Tax Returns, 1749-1753.)

05 Feb. 1734: Cuthbert Burrell applies for a marriage license to marry Jane Lash of Warden, witnessed by Alexander Maughn; 16 Jan 1743 William Davison (also Dawson) s/o a WIlliam Davison/Dawson born at High Roses Bower (a separate property from Lower Roses Bower which, when I visited in 1998,was a ruin of a bastille- type dwelling. High Roses Bower was a very well teended house with several outbuildings, all in stone.) 03 Feb. 1743 Cuthbert Burrell, of Roses Bower, baptizes daughter Isobel 20 Aug 1747 CUthbert Burrell, resident at Roses Bower, baptizes son Thomas 10 Feb 1748 a Mary Davison/Ddawson fo High ROsesBower bap to WIlliam 08 July 1749 Land Tax return state that WIlliam Dodd and Cuthbert Burrell shared the tax for Cragshield and that WIlliam Dawson assessed for both High and Low Roses Bower; (Comment per Maureen: If the land tax was shared, there has to be a very close link between the two families of Dodds and Burrells, not yet discovered.) Oct. 1749 Thomas Burrell died at Roses Bower. His widow would have been about 32 years old, deduced from her age at her death, so born about 1717. We questioned Maureen about the hypothesis that Cuthbert then married Dorothy, as his children spoke of Dorothy as their mother. She said that if they were brothers, that could not have happened, an action outlawed from the time of Henry VIII. Then, could it have been that Cuthbert was their son, especially as he named his first son Thomas - a standard naming practice - and would account for Dorothy remaining in the Burrell household. However, Cuthbert states in his marriage bond that he is upwards of 30 years of age on the last day of December 1743, ergo born 1713/4..so not a child of Dorothy, but perhaps Dorothy is a second wife.. OR perhaps Cuthbert and Thomas are brothers, so she is his sister-in-law....or a step-mother, wife of an older brother. The only wife discovered for Cuthbert is Jane Lash.

That's all for today.

While there is evidence to support the name Cuthbert for this profile, it's possible it should be named Thomas:

Cuthbert Burrel's "grandfather, Cuthbert Burrel, was an English squire, and his great-grandfather's name was Thomas Burrel."

"Memorial and Biographical History of the Counties of Fresno, Tulare, and Kern, California", Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, 1891.
