Biography

Isaac was born in about 1838 in New York or Pennsylvania. He was the son of Phineas Burrell and Eunice Unknown. He and his wife Esther were married for 33 years at the time of the 1900 U.S. Census.

An 1890 schedule of Civil War veterans for Chatham, Pennsylvania, shows a date of enlistment of 1862 for Isaac. There is a notation that he was a deserter and never discharged. New York, Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts show that Isaac enlisted in Rochester, New York in June, 1863 and deserted in August, 1863. This record shows that he was eventually discharged in November, 1864. The New York Muster Roll also records that Isaac was 26 years old and a farmer.

In 1869, Isaac was sentenced to three years for burning a barn. The record notes it was his first conviction, and that he had a wife and three children.

Research Notes

Isaac's date and place of birth are uncertain. According to 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census data, Isaac was born about 1838 in New York. The 1900 U.S. Census shows Isaac was born in 1831 in Pennsylvania. His death certificate asserts that he was born 29 Apr 1841 in Chatham Township, Pennsylvania. The informant for the death certificate was not a member of the Burrell family, so the birth information may or may not be accurate.
