His wife succeeded to a great part of the Ancaster estates in 1779, to the barony of Willoughby de Eresby and to the hereditary office of Lord Great Chamberlain of England on 18 Mar 1780. He was appointed her deputy in Aug 1781.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Haslemere between 4 November 1776 and 1780. He was invested as a Knight on 6 July 1781 at St. James's Palace, St. James's, London, England.
