Biography

Hubert “Bert” Burrington, son of Wilber Burington (1837–1902) and Mary A (Prunk) Hinshaw (1844–1934), was born 7 Sep 1879 at Rice County, Minnesota, USA.,[1] and he died 16 Sep 1932 (aged 52) at Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, USA. He was buried in the Old Highland Cemetery, Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana.[2] The cited source materials reveal two areas of conflicting information regarding the subject of this profile; the first of these is his name. A review of his birth records, census records and death records reveals that the name given to the subject by his parents at his birth [1] was Hubert Burrington, and it was spelled exactly in this manner. His name is cited in this fashion in most of the early census records, but as Hubert reaches adulthood, his name becomes more frequently rendered as Herbert Burington and upon his death this is how his name is etched on his tombstone, [2] and this tombstone also makes it clear that he was known by his family and friends as Bert. It seem the most likely explanation for this shift is that Bert preferred the name Herbert over Hubert; thus by usage and physical separation (the parents who named him remained in Minnesota) Herbert Burington became his defacto name identity. A second conflicting data item for Bert is the date of his birth. His Forest, Minnesota birth records states that he was born on 7 September 1779; and the 8 June 1880 Forest, Minnesota census enumeration [3] of his birth family affirms that Herbert was eight months old when this census was recorded. Thus, there are two primary records which affirm and independently correlate the 7 Sept 1779 birth date as accurate and correct. However, a number of records in his adult life, in particular his tombstone, record the date of his birth as 7 Sept 1880, [2] which, by correlation to the 1880 census, [3] may clearly be demonstrated to be in error, because this tombstone asserted birth date would require that the 1880 census enumeration would have counted Hubert as eight monts old on a date that was three months prior to the birth date asserted on his tombstone.

  • Primary Source, (burial); Tertiary Source (biography), Find A Grave Index [2] Data Summary:
  1. ) Find A Grave: Memorial #37367272: Herbert “Bert” Burington, son of Wilber Burington (1837–1902) and Mary A (Prunk) Hinshaw (1844–1934), was born 7 Sep 1880 at Rice County, Minnesota, USA., and he died 16 Sep 1932 (aged 52) at Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, USA. {Editorial Note: the birth date on the tombstone (1880) does not agree with his birth record 1779. The 1880 Forest, Rice, Minnesota census has Herbert Burrington enumerated in the household of his father Wilbur Burrington age months on a census that was enumerated on 8 June 1880; therefore affirming the date, 7 Sept 1879, on his birth record [1] is correct and that the date, 7 Sep 1880, inscribed on his tombstone is incorrect. }

Burrington-167 and Burington-9 appear to represent the same person because: Same name (with variant spelling of surname), same FAG profile, same parents, same wife, same vital data (FAG DoB is incorrect. Obvious duplicate.
