Thomas Richard Burris was born on August 10, 1857, to Moses Burris Jr. and Elizabeth (Harvey) Burris of rural Marion County, Indiana.[1]
In 1860, Richard was 2 years old and living with his parents and 5 older siblings on their farm in Center Township, Hancock County, Indiana. Hancock County is adjacent to Marion County where Thomas was born.[2]
His father, Moses Burris, Jr., died on November 26, 1862, during the American Civil War just after his Union Army regiment had engaged the Confederate troops in the battle of Perryville, Tennessee. Richard was five years old at the time.[3] Soon after the war, his mother Elizabeth moved the family to rural Kansas.
On March 1, 1875, Thomas was 17 years old and living with his mother Elizabeth (54) on the family farm in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas.[4]
In 1880, Thomas (22) lived on the family farm in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas, with his mother Elizabeth (60) and 9-year-old George Henkle.[5]
In 1885, a Thomas Burris was living with the JT Knox family of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. He listed his occupation as painter, but he didn't state his age so this source needs further research.[6]
In 1900, Thomas (43) was living with his mother Elizabeth (80) and a nephew, Charles Chamblin (21), on the family farm in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas.[7]
In 1905, Thomas (47) and Johanna (29) lived with their children - John (3) and Fred Moses (2 weeks) - and Thomas's mother Elizabeth (85) on the farm they owned, free and clear, in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas.[8]
In 1910, Thomas (53) and Johanna (35) lived with their children John (8), Moses (3) and Maggie (3), in a farm they were renting in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas.[9]
In 1915, Thomas (58) and Johanna (40) lived on a farm they mortgaged in Center Township, Lyon county, Kansas, with their children John (12), Moses (10), Maggie (8) and Mary (4).[10]
In 1920, Thomas (63) and Johanna (45) were living on a farm they owned in Center Township with their children John (17), Moses (15), Maggie (14), Mary (8) and Freda (3).[11]
In 1925, Thomas was 70 years old and living with Anna (50) and their children John (23), Mose (20), Maggie (18), Mary (15) and Freda (10) on their farm in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas.[12]
In 1930, Thomas (73) and Johanna (55) were living with their daughter Freelove Burris on the family farm in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas.[13]
Thomas passed away on March 17, 1933.[1] He is buried in Line Cemetery, Olpe, Lyon County, Kansas, USA.[1]
