John married first, Lovisa Jane Clements, and they had ten children: Charles, Mary Susan, Martha E, James Warren, Sara A, Willard Clark, Elias Edward Vernon, Joseph Milton C, John Leonard and Elva J. Some spelled their surname Burrous, and some Burris.
John married second, Mary S McKee, who was about 20 years his junior, and they had ten children: Ida Florence, Walter A., Silva May, Rebecca, Grace A, Osa "Ocie" Maud, Goldie Viola, Robert Emerson, Ira Clinton, and Jennie O. All spelled their surname Burrows.
John was a Civil War veteran, fighting for the Union side.
