Biography

His death date is of record[1][2] His birth year is calculated from death date and age at death.

His parents are identified through circumstantial evidence[3] Benjamin Burroughs left a will in which son John is listed first and is bequeathed land adjoining that of his cousin David (son of Benjamin's brother Isaac). The land is described with some specificity, so it may be possible to confirm John's descent from Benjamin through a land record concerning this property.

John married first Leah DuBois , daughter of David DuBois and Elizabeth Newkirk, on April 1, 1781[4][5]. He married second Leah's sister Rebecca on January 23, 1783. The marriage to record is of record from the death record of their daughter Mary (Van Meter)[1], but no confirmation of this marriage date has been found.

John served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Jacob DuBois's company and also under Colonel Elias Dayton, 3rd New Jersey Regiment[6].
