Biography

In the New York Dutch Church Records[1], we find a marriage on September 10 1700 of Jeremias Burroughs of Newton, Long Island and Cornelia Eckerson. Corenelia was baptized Nov. 15, 1682, the daughter of Jan Thomaszen (later went by Erickson) and Apolonia Cornelis Swits. Their children, with baptism dates, were

Hannah bap. May 24, 1701
Apolonia bap. Apr 11, 1703
Elizabeth bap. Mar 7, 1705
Jeremias bap. Feb 12, 1707
Jan bap. Mar 30, 1709
Isaac bap. Oct. 17, 1711
Maria bap. Oct 12, 1715
Abraham bap. Oct 29, 1718
Jeremias bap. Feb 15, 1721
Abigail bap. Dec 16, 1724

We see early children named after the maternal grandmother, father, and maternal grandfather. It seems quite plausible that we may find the names of the paternal grandparents in this list as well, i.e., Jeremiah and either Hannah or Elizabeth. This fits perfectly with Jeremiah being a son of Jeremiah and Hannah Way.

Among the papers of James Riker at the New York Public library is reportedly a description of a deed from Jeremiah Burroughs of New York City dated 9 December 1703 to Joseph Burroughs of Newtown conveying land at Newtown.[2]

From Genealogy of Early Settlers in Trenton and Ewing "Old Hunterdon County," New Jersey, by EF & WS Cooley, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD, 1977, p. 18: "Jeremiah -- this is probably the one whose grave-stone, in Ewing church-yard, represents to have died 1777-, aged 38."

ANOTHER ARTICLE - clears up dates: Jeremiah BURROUGHS was born circa 1709 in Trenton (now Ewing) Tp, Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co, NJ. He died shortly before 5 Sep 1746 in Hunterdon Co, NJ. He was buried in Presbyterian Cemetery, Ewing Tp, Mercer Co, NJ, (died Sep 174?, age 38).

An inventory of the estate of Jeremiah BURROUGHS was taken on 5 Sep 1746 in Hunterdon Co, NJ. Administration of the estate of Jeremiah BURROUGHS was granted to John BURROUGHS on 10 Nov 1746 in Hunterdon Co, NJ, (John was a yeoman from Trenton Tp).
