Biography

1st wife: Sarah Jane Rice b. 1820 Chillicothe, Ross, Ohio d. 1870 Laurel, Lewis, KY

Children: Richard (b. KY), Rebecca Ann (b. IN), John Riley* b. 1854 KY, Mary and Martha (twins) b. 1858 KY.

  • Son John Riley Burt married three times. 1) ? 2) Elizabeth Arms 3) Mary Westfall in Athens Co., Ohio on October 15, 1903. John Riley Burt had 23 children and died of dementia and arteriosclerosis in 1929 at Athens State Hospital. According to his marriage license his father was Benjamin William Burt and his mother was Sarah Jane Rice.

1872: Benjamin W. Burt, Minister runs away with another man's wife. He is caught and both are returned to Portsmouth. He removes to Jackson County, Ohio and officiates over the Baker marriage (www.newspapers.com) where his son John R. lives at the time.

1874: He returns to Lewis County, KY and weds Priscilla Evans, age 19.

2nd wife: Priscilla Evans b. 1855 Lewis, KY d. 1885 Lewis, KY, d/o Michael C. Evans and Minerva Dickson (Priscilla dies in childbirth with William Edward Burt).

Daughter Cordelia was born about 1874 KY m. Allan Yates d. Portsmouth OH had 1 child; Callie Mae Yates

Daughter Levina was born about 1875 KY m. William Lewis d. 1912 Lewis, KY buried Evans Cemetery.

Son Benjamin Franklin Burt was born February 24, 1877 in Carter Co, KY m. Jessie Maude Gentry d. 2 August 1943 in Portsmouth, Scioto, OH (Occupation: Barber).

Daughter Tiana was born about 1879 I Kentucky. Died young.

Daughter Nettie Minerva was born in 1882 in Carter Co., KY d. 1977 Lucasville, Ohio m. 1) Allen Brown 2) Harris. Guardianship papers in 1899 prove death of Benjamin W. Burt in Lewis Co., KY. Nettie Minerva lives with her oldest sister Cordelia (Burt) Yates who married Allen Yates. (Guardianship Bonds, Portsmouth, Scioto, OH 1899). She marries Allen Brown also 2 October 1899.

William Edward Burt b. 1885 Head of Grassy, Lewis, KY m. 1911 Nancy Jane Vermillion d. 1945 Portsmouth, Scioto, OH buried Greenlawn Cemetery. Enter the United States Army in 1905; WWI veteran; worked for the City of Portsmouth at the time of his death. On his father's death, William Edward Burt was apprenticed to the LAMB family and is found there in the 1900 US Census, age 14 years. When he enlists in the U.S. Army, age 19, his occupation is farmer.

There are several men named Benjamin W. Burt born between 1800-1830. Please use great care in determining your patriarch. Other researchers claim this Ben W. Burt moved to Missouri. The papers on file between Portsmouth, Ohio and Lewis County, KY prove this Benjamin W. Burt never moved from the area. If you have questions, or match our DNA, please contact me.
