Biography

Birth

Joseph Burt was born on 26 September 1673 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts to David Burt (before 1629-1690) and Mary Holten (1639-1718) as the ninth of thirteen children.

Siblings

All children born in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
  1. David Burt, 1st of this name in the family, born 30 July 1656. He was run over by his father's cart and killed on 30 August 1660 in Northampton.
  2. Jonathan Burt born 1 May 1658. He died on 15 April 1662.
  3. Henry Burt born 20 August 1660. He married 1) Elizabeth Alvord on 12 December 1684 and 2) Hannah Denslow on 9 December 1687 and 3) Mary Unknown in 1690. He died on 26 September 1735 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
  4. Mary Burt, first of this name in the family, born 18 March 1663. She died on 3 November 1666 in Northampton.
  5. Sarah Burt born 2 May 1665. She married Robert Porter on 21 May 1688 in Northampton, Massachusetts. Sarah died on 14 May 1689 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
  6. Hannah Burt born 2 September 1667. She died 3 May 1689, unmarried.
  7. David Burt Jr. born 25 August 1669. He was captured by Indians on 8 February 1690. Death date and place unknown.
  8. Jonathan Burt born 5 September 1671. He married Mindwell Taylor on 2 June 1696. He died on 15 October 1745 in the paternal homestead at Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
  9. Mary Burt born before her baptism date of 3 May 1676. She married 1) Dr. Thomas Hastings on 14 February 1706 and 2) Samuel Belden on 7 May 1713.
  10. Ruth Burt born April 1677. She married Nehemiah Allen on 16 December 1710. Ruth died in March 1746.
  11. Benjamin Burt born 17 November 1680. He married Sarah Belden on 9 October 1702 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Benjamin died on 20 May 1759 in Ridgefield, Fairfield, Connecticut.
  12. John Burt born 29 April 1682.

He married Sarah Cowles (5 June 1681 at Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts-21 May 1772 at Northfield, Massachusetts), daughter of John Cowles and Deborah Bartlett, on 16 April 1702 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.

  3. Mary Burt born 8 February 1707 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. She died on 26 November 1772, unmarried.
  4. Eleazer Burt born in 1711 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Living in Northfield in 1762.
  5. Miriam Burt born 2 September 1713 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts.
  6. Asahel Burt born 31 August 1715 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He married Martha Unknown. Killed by Indians on 15 April 1747 at Pochaug Hill.
  7. Aaron Burt born 17 September 1717 Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He married Miriam Elmer (she died in 1792). Aaron died in 1796.

Occupation

He was a cordwainer by trade, but also held many town offices and actively fought the Indians in the Capt. Joseph Kellogg Company and the Crown Point Expedition.

Residences

After marriage he lived in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts until 1719. Then he became on of the first settlers of Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.

Death

Joseph died on 13 January 1759 in Northfield, Franklin, Massachusetts at the age of 83.
