Biography

Vera was the youngest of seven children in a poor family living in Russia/Ukraine. Her family emigrated to the U.S. when she was three. They settled in a community of Russian Jewish immigrants in Providence, Rhode Island.

Vera began to work in a factory, educated herself and eventually became a speech, drama and English teacher at Julia Richmond High School in New York.

Vera married Bernard. They divorced in 1944. Vera who believed that organized religion does more harm than good, raised Peter and his sister with no religious observance but did not deny the family's Jewish identity and certainly promulgated Jewish values of doing good deeds and pursuing justice.

Vera was a member of the teachers' union and Planned Parenthood.

Vera married again to Harold Wisebrode, the executive director of Central Synagogue in New York.
