Biography

William was the son of Joseph Burton and Elizabeth (Burton) Burton. He lived in Sussex County, Delaware.

In 1717, his uncle Jacob Burton left a bequest to William in his will.

William's father died in late 1719 or early 1720. His will makes William the principal heir of his property when he reached the age of twenty one.

He administered the probate of his father's estate along with his step-father, William Prettyman. In 1735, his younger brothers Jacob and Joseph successfully petitioned to have William their his court-appointed guardian. In 1736, William entered a complaint in Orphans Court on behalf of his brothers.
