William Burton was the son of Woolsey Burton and Ann Leatherbury[1]
He was born 7 December 1729 in Sussex County, Delaware [2][3]
In 1746, he appeared in Sussex, Delaware Orphans Court to petition that his brother Woolsey be appointed as his guardian. As of 1763, he was one of three administrators of his mother's estate, along with brothers Benjamin and John.
William died in 1777 in Sussex county, Delaware. [4]
William wrote his will in 1772, but it wasn't proved until five years later. Presumably, whatever illness prompted the writing then passed.
The will makes the following bequests:
To eldest son, Joseph -- all William's lands, excepting land and marsh called 'Bottle Cake' and land and marsh lying northeast of the dwelling plantation, which go to son William. But Joseph forfeits the bequest if he disputes his brother William's lands. Joseph was also left an enslaved man named Sam.
To wife, Elizabeth: “Two feather beds and furniture, one good yoke of oxen, four cows & calves, my best riding horse, side saddle & bridle, one large wood cupboard, one red chest, one tea table and kettle & all the tea where thereunto belonging, one weaving loom with all slays[?] gears & tackle, ten head of sheep and all my stock of swine, one large Common Prayer Book, one negro woman named Derender…and the use of two Negro slaves called George & Kent during her natural life. At her death the two negro slaves shall descend to my youngest son Peter Burton.”
“Unto my Daughter Ann Cord Burton my large looking glass, one large Prayer Book.”
The will makes William's wife Elizabeth and son William Burton the executors of his estate.
It was witnessed by Ann Burton, Woolsey Burton, Junr., and Benj. Burton and was proved 10 May 1777.
