Biography

William Burton was born in 1789 and baptised on 9 May 1790 at Eastwick, Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of Charles Burton and Sarah Brown.^[1] Note: Another William Burton was baptised at Eastwick in 1785 but he married Jane Thoroughgood in 1807 and they lived at Widford, Hertfordshire. The two families should not be confused.

William Burton (listed as Button in transcripts of the marriage register) married Mary Morrel on 15 Aug 1813 at Hunsdon.^[2] They had ten children: Sarah Burton (b. 1814), James Burton (b. 1816), William Burton (b. 1819), Susan Burton (b. 1821), Jane Burton (b. 1823), John Burton (b. 1827), Frederick Burton (b. 1829), Henry Burton (b. 1833), Eliza Burton (b. 1835), William Burton (b. 1840). They moved to Netteswell, Essex around 1830.

In the 1841 census, William Burton was age 45 living at Tye Green, Netteswell, Essex with his wife Mary Burton (45), children John Burton (13), Frederick Burton (11), Henry Burton (8), Eliza Burton (6), William Burton (1). Occupation: Ag Labr.^[3]

In the 1851 census, William Burton was age 66 living at Tye Green, Netteswell, Essex with his wife Mary Burton (60), children John Burton (24), Henry Burton (18), William Burton (10). Occupation: Ag Labr.^[4]

In the 1861 census, William Burton was age 72 living at Tye Green, Netteswell, Essex with his wife Mary Burton (70), son William Burton (21). Occupation: Agricultural Labourer.^[5]

In the 1871 census, William Burton was age 83 living at Netteswell, Essex with his wife Mary Burton (82). Occupation: Relief From Parish.^[6]

William Burton died in 1874 age 86 at Netteswell. He was buried on 12 Jul 1874 at St Andrew, Netteswell.^[7][8]
