The second son of Ralph Burton of Lindley (a now-defunct ancient country estate in Leicestershire, once incorporating the village of Fenny Drayton but now largely overbuilt and its manor house demolished[1]). In the calculation of his nativity, on the right hand of his monument in Christ Church Cathedral, the date of his birth is given as 8 Feb. 1576-7.[2]
He is well known as the writer of 'The Anatomy of Melancholy'.
Sometime vicar of St. Thomas, Oxford, he died at Oxford on 25th January 1640(modern calendar) and was buried in Christ Church Cathedral[3].
He left a will dated 15 August 1639 and proved 11 May 1640.[4]
