Biography

Henry Harrison Burton was born on 18 Oct 1781. He was the son of John Isaac Burton and Delia Beam. He passed away about 1853.

He married Mary Elizabeth (Williams) Burton (1786-1850), daughter of William Williams (1760-1846) and Judith (Baker) Williams (1764-1840).

PERSONAL NOTES OF MARY VIOLA BAKER-SIMRELL (Mother of Mary Viola Simre ll-Greenwood): "Henry Burton came in 1799 from Maryland to De Kalb County. He was one of the Commissioners to help lay off Smithville. He was a Baptist Preacher. The night that he died, he was unable to lay down on the bed and sat up and quoted scripture and talked all night until he fell over dead in his chair. My father, James Marion Baker, was sitting up with him and was there when he died." [1]

  1. 9 DEC 1985, Notes from Sigrid L Grace, 7522 Abbott Road, Imlay City, MI 48444 who is a descendant of Zelpha Burton: "I believe Henry Burton came to Dekalb Co., TN with a group of people from Maryland. The leader of this group was Adam Dale of Worcester County, Maryland. Henry Burton would have left Maryland ca 1799. In the HISTORY OF TENNESSEE page 846, he is listed as an early settler in Dekalb County and also on page 849 he is listed as a Justice of Dekalb County."
  2. 1976, Notes of Ruth Dietrich, 7108 Glen Arbor Rd., Louisville, KY 40222:
    1. Henry Burton Bible in possession of Fanny M. Burton Jones (Mrs. Prettyman Jones) Buffalo Valley, TN.
    2. Henry Burton came in 1799 from Maryland to Dekalb County, one of the commissioners to lay off Smithville. A Baptist preacher. On the nig ht of his death he was unable to lie down, so sat up and quoted scripture and talked all night until he fell over dead. James Marion Baker was sitting up with him when he died.
