Note N15I believe that Samuel was married to Malinda Roe. Samuel and Lucy were divorced, and that is the reason Lucy was listed by herself on the 1840 census. If you think there is a possibility they might be the same I'll send you an outline sketch of this family. Oddly enough my own Samuel Burton was born in 1799 but I know all of his children's names and their descendants so it isn't the same. Maybe you will see something in the name pattern that fits. I've never seen a copy as I believe it was a private issue and is hard to find. I only know that most Burton researches from the past refer to it and it would be worth checking it out to see if anyone has a copy and could look for it. At least, it should be available at the Library of Congess. Some kind soul in that area might look it up for you. Isn't there a group who do research for free if you will do equal research in your area? Maybe even on the Burton Genforum site someone would either have a copy or offer to help?Let me hear what you find and good 'hunting'!Ann17547-1794 book H Georgia Order for the arrest of deserters from the 60th Regiment at Charleston, S. Deserters are believed to have gone to Georgia and include:John Burton, 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, 25 years old, brown complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, born in England. The Burton family moved from Oglethrope Co., GA, to Pratville, AL. They lived in Lowndes Co., near Montgomery, AL, before moving to Clarke Co, AL. The 1850 Oglethrope Co., GA, Census lists: J.L.Burton 20 M farmer b: Ga. 1831. The 1960 Censusfor Lowndes Co. Lucy, mother of John L.Burton, had married again by this time.Samuel and Lucy 's marriage record is on p. 118, vol. 1, 1794-1832 at the Oglethorpe Co., GA Courthouse. Other Burton marriages in Oglethorge Co., GA, are:Burton, Joseph to Elina Edwards 9 Sept. 1848Burton, Robert to Lydia Clayton 13 Mar 1798Burton, William to Nancy Hughes 25 Aug. 1804(Lynne Mueller said there is information in the GEORGIA BLACK BOOK by Soc. Historical Press that has information on a Samuel serving time in prison.)Written in the GEORGIA BLACK BOOK, Vol. 1, on page 31 is the following entry: Samuel Burton, Butts County, Robinson's Dist.; Burton deserted from the service of the United States and the State of Georgia during the late war with Great Britain andthe Indians. Condemned December Term, 1827. On page 88 is the following: #529; Samuel Burton; Assault to murder; term, 4 years; received, 28 October 1834; expires, 28 October 1838; county where convicted, Oglethorpe County; Farmer; birthplace,Virginia; no. of sentences,1; 33 yrs. (age); 6 ft. 1 in.; fair complexion; light hair; blue eyes; served out sentence. In Vol. II on page 82 is a reference for the Third Division, Second Collection District, Issue of 8 Sept. 1812 listing "SamuelBurton for R. Flournoy". I suppose a Samuel Burton paid taxes for R. Flournoy. I do not know if the three entries above are references for our Samuel. But, if they are, our Samuel was born in 1801 in Virginia and lived in Oglethorpe County, GA. I would like to do more research on the Burtons. This is from Becky Maglight Mead which she wrote in an email on 28 Jul 1998:"I went down to the archives and xeroxed the indexes for 1790 through 1830 for Virginia and Georgia. The censuses for both Virginia and Georgia aren't complete. You must know that; I didn't. But...Oglethorpe exists for 1800. I decided to gothrough Virginia's census indexes and list the Burtons in each decade beginning with 1800 (the decade when Samuel was born), and see if I could figure out who disappeared. Then I went through Georgia's indexes to see when they appeared. I've gotto go through the actual records now to see if I can match age and sex data. That will take awhile; don't expect anything for a long time. I'm starting with the Williams on the premise that the "W" initial is for William. I also need to gothrough the Georgia Land Lottery Records. A lot of Virginians went south at that time whether or not they won land. My Dad told me that families traveled in packs - a group of neighbors from one state often migrated together to another state. So I'm noting neighbor names as well. In 1820, there were two Samuel Burtons in the Georgia census, one from Lincoln County, and one from Jones County. While I was at it, I ran through the 1840 census to check data for Samuel and Lucy Burton. I think Lucy was a widow when she married Sam and I think she was about 7 or 8 years older than he was and had a pack of girls. The 1840 census given LucyBurton between 40 and 50 years old, witha boy under ten (John), a boy over ten (Joseph, and two girls 15-20 years old. Two girls in their late teens??? John and Lucy were married in 1828. So I went back to 1830, and lo, there they were again.Sam (20-30), Lucy (30-40!), but under 5 (Joseph), and five (count them...FIVE) girls: 2 (5-10), 2 (10-40), and one over 15. So Lucy had to have been married by at least 1814 to have a 15 year old daughter. And the youngest born by 1825. Thenher husband died, and along came tall blonde handsome Sam, and married the widow, with 5 girls and a farm, I bet. I went through all the Jacksons for 1820 and came up with three in Oglethorpe County, GA. Two of them, L..B. and Woody had wivesage 26-45, and both had children that would juggle into the right ages, assuming that boys left home and girls over 18 got married. Have you run into all this? Using 1820 & 1830 census categories, Lucy was born 1790-1794. That fits beingmarried 1810-1814.So, if you are rooting around in Georgia marriage records, look for any Jackson men who married a Lucy _______.Misc Data - 1820 US census for Oglethorpe Co., GA:Daniel Jackson: Males under 10 - 1, 16 to18 - 1, 18 to 26 - 2, 45 & over - 1. Females 16 to 26 - 2, 26 to 45 - 1, 45 & over - 1.L.B. Jackson: Males under 10 - 2, 10 to 16 - 1, 26 to 45 - 1. Females under 10 - 3, 26 to 45 - 1.Woody Jackson: Males under 10 - 1, 16 to 18 -1, 18 to 26 - 1,26 to 45 - 1, 45 & over - 2. Females under 10 - 3, 26 to 45 - 1.All three Jackson men were gone from Oglethorpe by 1830, the names were around in other counties. There are numerous Jacksons in Georgia beginning in 1800: 3 plus one with questionable spelling (Gellum) in Oglethorpe along (Oglethorge in theonly surviving census for 1800); 1810 - no info; 1820 - 29, and that's heads of families. A Daniel Jackson married Sally Favor 20 Dec 1799 in Wilkes County (immediately adjacent to Oglethorpe.) He could have married Lucy 15 years later if Sallydied, but there are no little girls under 10.Woody has a wide range of children's ages but has boys too old to be Lucy's. Lucy could have been his second wife. I"m putting my money on L.B. Jackson. Do you know where the names Sarah and Rebecca came from? I suspect Burton names, becauseolder sister of Taddy Mama was Martha S(usan?), Amanda's sisters.Subj: [SE Pioneers] Glover and Lankford lands Date: 2/13/01 2:46:31 PM Eastern Standard Time From: tonin1@airmail.net (Tree Mother)To: SOUTHEAST-PIONEERS-L@rootsweb.comI have a land sale by Edmund Lankford/Langford dated 1801 in which the land being sold to William Burton is described as "80 acres more or less situate lying and being on the waters of Ninety Six Creek in the County of Edgefield in the stateaforesaid [SC] bounding northwardly on land belonging to DudleyBrooks; southwardly on the lands of Reaves Martin; eastwardly on the land of Wiley Glover and northwardly on land of said William Burton." Locate the original Langford/Lankford will.I have been backtracking especially Wiley Glover's land ownership since heseems to have been closely attached to Edmund perhaps in friendship andperhaps also with John Burton.I do have access to land surveys before and after the Rev. War but do nothave any land sale and deeds materials. If anyone does have access to land sales prior to and after the Rev. War andcan locate the Lankford purchase of this land, I will be more than happy tocopy surveys and mail them in exchange for copies of sale or deed record.Edmund migrated to Georgia as did some of the Jackson family members.Ann Jackson Langford Millner siblings were Abigail, Ailsey, Henry, James,Drury and Green. Drury died in Georgia about 1798 or so. He was a Rev. War Soldier and received a land grant in Georgia from Elijah Clarke. He does not appear to have taken up land but may have sold or assigned his grant to another person. My goodness this has gotten to be a long message. I live a skip and hop from you in Jacksonville. The problem is that I haven't been able to find anything much on Samuel except what little I have in Oglethorpe Co., GA. I think he must have been born around the early1800s in VA (or late 1700s), and he was in Oglethorpe Co., GA, when he married Lucy Jackson, (b. 1791 in VA) on 22 Apr 1828. I believe that Lucy was married to a Jackson prior to marrying Samuel, due to the number of children in their householdon the 1830 census. She may have been married to an L.B. or Woody Jackson, since both of them were in the area on the 1820 census, but were not there later. She was probably older than Samuel by 5 to 10 years. He died before 1844. This isprobably not helpful info, but Lucy married Wm. Callahan, Sr. on 5 Aug 1844 in Oglethorpe, and they moved to Lowndes Co., AL, with the two Burton sons, Joseph N., and John Lewis, b. 18 Aug 1831, who is my ancestor. Lucy died aft 1860 and before1870 in Lowndes Co., AL.. A William Callahan married Sally Thompson on 24 September 1805, in Oglethorpe Co., GA. They may be the parents of William, Jr.Anyway, I believe that Samuel's father could be either John, Lewis, Joseph, Samuel. or a name that starts with an N, based of his sons' names and his name. His son, John Lewis, had two daughters, Martha Susan, Sarah Rebecca (my line), and I thinkthe names Sarah and Rebecca are from the Burton line, because these names do not appear in maternal line. This is all I know. John Lewis Burton and Amanda Frances weremarried in Oglethorpe Co., GA, on 2 Jan 1853. So they moved to AL sometimes after this date.I am not sure if the Joseph your found is John's older brother, but I do have a record for a Joseph Burton marrying Elina Edwards on 9 Sept 1848 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. The age is right and the Elina listed in the marriage record could be forEliza, which is could be short for Elizabeth on the 1850 census. Thanks for your help.DavineIn a message dated 1/28/2009 8:58:48 P.M. I appreciate you passing on this information. I am finding this Burton line intriguing in more ways than one. It has been about 15 years that I have been sitting on this line without gaining muchheadway; so, any little tidbit spurs me to try to find something else. I had two 2nd cousins who worked on this line, one of them died, and the other one gave up on the Burtons. Was any of the info you found be on footnote.com?Thanks for added info!DavineIn a message dated 4/282009 2:40:10 P.M.
