Martha was born in 1703 at Gloucester, Virginia, the youngest daughter of Col. Lewis Burwell, [1] member of the Council of Gloucester County, Virginia. Martha Martin’s mother was Colonel Burwell’s second wife Martha Lear, daughter of Colonel John Lear, member of the Council of Nansemond, Virginia. [2]
She married John Martin, third son of Samuel & Lettice Martin, justice of the peace burgess for Caroline County. Martha and John had three sons, George, Samuel, Lewis Burwell, and four daughters. Martha died 27 May 1738 at the age of 35 and was buried at Clifton in Caroline County.
