Matilda was murdered, along with her husband and youngest daughter Emma on the night of June 2, 1893. No motive for the brutal crime was ever determined, and no perpetrators were ever brought to justice.[1] News of the sensational crime spread across North America, even being reported on the front page of the Los Angeles Herald.[2]
