Disputed Origins

Birth dates ranging from 1587-1620 have been proposed for Reynold. Sources from Messing England and others point to him being the sole emigrant named Bush from that place and that his parents were Reynold Bush (1567-abt.1602) and Judith.[1][2][3] this would make Reynold possibly the brother of John Bush (1593-1670) and not his son, plus the idea that Grace (Saunders) Palmer (abt.1631-aft.1680) is the mother of a son born 20 years before her birth is impossible. Reynold's parents are most likely Reynold Bush (abt.1567-abt.1602) and Isabella Hall (1571-aft.1612)

Biography

Reynold Bush has an estimated birth date of as early as 1593 in Messing England.[4] But this seems unlikely if he lived until 1686[4] A source from Messing England suggests that he was born 1600[1]

Depending on when he emigrated, he may have married Elizabeth (his wife in 1666)[4] in England.

Immigration

Renold Bush is said to have left Messing, England in 1631.[1] No Immigrants with the last name of Bush are in the Great Migration Directory.

Reynold Bush immigrated from the county of Essex sometime, during the period of 1620 to 1650.[3]

New England

At the Cambridge town meeting held before the 26 October 1638 meeting, mention was made of land to be fenced in lying on the south side of the Charles River, on the "hither syde of the lott wch shall be graunted unto Bush".[5]

Renold Bush appears on a deed dated 25 January 1641 (N. S.), when he calls himself, "Renold Bush of Cambridge planter" and sold "fower acres of Land lying and beinge within his howse lotte (abbutting on ye Garden) for 40 shillings to John Stow, Sr. of Roxbury, Massachusetts.[6][7] He also sold to John White of Watertown four acres of land on the south side of the Charles river on 4 March 1642 (O.S.?) [dated 4 (1) 1642].[8]

Ten acres were laid out to Renold Bush on the "other side of the water nere watertowne Mill" in 1645.[9] On 4 June 1652 [4 (4) 52] land on the "Shaw Shine river" was divided, with "Ranold Bush" receiving 10 acres.[10]

On 14 January 1655/6 [14 (11) 1655], Renold was fined 20 shillings for "Enterteyneing [his son Jno. Bush] with out consent [of the Cambridge townsmen]".[11]

On 12 April 1647 [12 (2) 1647] Renold was permissed to cut down half a dozen trees for fencing on the "other side of the water uppon the commons".[12] He was again granted permission on 13 January 1661/2 [13 (11) 1661].[13]

On 1 April 1666 a Middlesex County Indenture was made between "Ronald Bush" and Edward Devotion of Boston. Bush sold his 'mansion house' and a plot of twenty-six acres for £60. The deed is signed by Ronald and Elizabeth Bush. In 1685 this land was sold by Edward's widow, it being "formerly apperteyning to Ronald Bush & Elizabeth Bush of Cambr. Village".[4]

In his old age Renold Bush married again, making a prenuptial agreement September 2, 1678: "Reynold Bush, Cambridge, planter, for and in consideration of the great love that I have and bear unto Susanna Lovell late of Beverly in the County of Wilts in Old England, whom I purpofe forthwth to marry," created a trust for her with John Fay of Watertown and John Thorn of Cambridge as trustees, On this same day appears in Cambridge records the marriage of Renold and Susannah Lovett....There were two children by this marriage. Their names are not known, but when Renold Bush's estate was settled in 1686, a daughter of 4 years and a son of 16 months are mentioned. The widow then married Thomas Hall, then of Worcester, Massachusetts, and they may have removed to Norwich, Connecticut."[4] Their marriage was recorded 2 September 1678 at Cambridge.[14]

Reynold Bush seems to have had financial trouble by the 1680s. On 17 March 1681/2, after a petition from the selectmen of Cambridge, the General Court at Boston "empowred [the selectmen of Cambridge] to make sale of land, or otheruise, as they shall judge meet for payment of just debts, supply & releife of [Reynold] Bush & family".[15] A copy of this was recorded into the Cambridge town book dated 9 February 1682 [sic].[16] Years later, on 11 March 1700 (N.S.) the town sold "the land formerly belonging to Reynold Bush which ye Town had by Execution for his Maintenance" for "repairing the school house".[17]

In Neighbouring Watertown on 3 March 1683/4, Mr. Goddard was informed that the "selectmen did not aprooue of his taking in of ould goodman Bush his wiues sistur into his famyly".[18]

Reynold Bush died before 1686 when his estate was settled [4][19]

Spouses

Spouse (1): Elizabeth Clench[20][21]

Children

Reynold Bush was married twice. First to Elizabeth,[4] and secondly to Susannah Lovett.[4]

Renold and Elizabeth had at least one known child:

  1. John Bush
    • a fine was issued to "Jno." Bush and his father Renold dated 14th day 11th month 1655[11]
    • it is suggested that this John Bush was the father of Joseph Bush from Newton Massachusetts[2] and of Samuel and Jonathan from Springfield/Westfield Massachusetts[4]

Renold Bush married Susannah Lovett on 2 September 1678 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[14]

Renold and Susannah had the following children:

  1. Hannah Bush b 1682 [4]
  2. Unknown Bush b abt. 1684 [4]

Disputed Children

  1. Son Reynold: It is sometimes proposed that Reynold had a son named Reynold who married Susannah Lovett, but the sources cited above accept that Reynold was "old" when he married Susannah.
  2. Jonathan Bush (abt.1650-1739) may be a son or grandson of Reynold. A misreading of the 1655 fine to Reynold Bush and his son "Jno. Bush"[11] as "Jonathan Bush" had been interpreted that he had a son of this name.
  3. John Bush (1633-1663) of Cambridge, may also be a son of Reynold[2]
  4. Samuel Bush (abt.1642-abt.1733) Suggested by DeForest and Deforest[4]
  5. Deborah Bush, wife of John MacCoone, suggested by DeForest and Deforest as a daughter or granddaughter[4]

  • Bush, Randoll & 2/wf Susanna Lovett/Lovill?/Lowell, m/2 Thomas Hall b 1686; m cont 2 Sep 1678; Cambridge.[23] A look at the sources cited by Torrey for Renold's first marriage to Elizabeth leads to the sources cited above. There are no clear sources for where Renold was between leaving Messing in 1631 and buying land in Cambridge in 1641.
  • Preliminary DNA research supports the idea that Reynold or his father may be the common ancestor of Jonathan Bush (abt.1650-1739), Samuel Bush (abt.1642-abt.1733) and Abiah Bush (1661-abt.1739).[24]

  • "...when Reynold Bush's estate was settled in 1686, a daughter of four years and a son of sixteen months are mentioned."[27]
  • Bush's widow, Susannah married Thomas Hall of Worcester, Massachusetts. The family later moved to Norwich Connecticut.[28]
  • Reynold Bush lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as evidenced by two land transactions documented in Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to N.E. 1620-1633, Vols. I-III, page 240, and in Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume VI, R-S, page 560. [29] In Jan. 1641, Reynold Bush, of Cambridge, planter, deeded to John Stowe, 4 acres, and in 1654 Reynold Bush mortgaged a property.[30]
  • Blog from Messing, England, James Savage's Dictionary and the Topographical Dictionary of 2885 emigrants point to Reynold being the only Bush emigrant from Messing, England.[31][2][3] The implication is that John Bush and Jonathan Bush are not siblings of Reynold.
  • Note from the FamilySearch Tree: NOTE: Reynold is the youngest son per his father's will. Some researchers have shown him to be the son of Samuel - that is a mistranscription. The christening record clearly shows he is the son of REYNOLD. John is his brother - they are not the same person. To have a middle name in this time period in England was exceptionally rare - even for nobility.

Bush-2927 and Bush-386 appear to represent the same person because: Bush-2927 is on the list of PGM profiles needed bio improvement. Reading over the profile, Bush-2927 reads almost exactly like Bush-386. Perhaps at one time it was thought that one of these men was the son of the other, but the sources support the story of a man who lived a long time and had three wives. Both profiles tell essentially the same story now, so let's merge them.
posted by Bill Pease
They do appear to be duplicates, but the merge should be handled carefully as both profiles seem to contain independnet material that may need to preserved and incorporated into the post-merge profile.
posted by Scott McClain
Bill, if you have a moment, it would be great if you could review the resulting merged profile. I'm not sure that we've clearly identified the three wives you mention. Thank you.
posted by M Cole
An earlier version of the profile must have had Grace Saunders listed as a wife as well, but there doesn't appear to be any facts to support her as a third wife since he was still married to Elizabeth in 1666 and she is correctly no longer attached to Reynold. Susannah Lovett should be listed in the Spouses section and if you want to keep the timeline section, a later birth date makes more sense, especially since he had two children late in his life.

I've added additional sources and checked a number which were already attached. The 1655 court record does not name his son as "Jonathan", but as "Jno." (at least in every transcription I've seen) which is an abbreviation for John. I moved mention of that in the "children" section from Jonathan to John, and the note about Jonathan into to the "disputed children" section.

Hi Perry,

It would be great if you would enter this as a citation in the profile itself, rather than leave it here as a comment. Thanks very much for finding it...nice work. Jen, for PGM
