GARDEN CITY BOY KILLED BY AUTO
Early Bush, 9, Knocked From Wagon Onto Porch
Early Bush, 9, of Garden City, was fatally injured yesterday morning when knocked from his toy wagon to the porch of Atkins Store, near his home, by the impact of an automobile.
This brought to 12 the number of motor vehicle fatalities in the county since January 1, as compared with 13 during the entire year of 1936.
The accident, occurring about 9:30 a.m., brought almost instant death to the nine-year-old boy. He suffered a fractured neck and cerebral hemorrhage, Dr. G. A. L. Kolmer, county coroner, reported.
Deputy Sheriff R. H. Hayes, county officer who investigated, said he understood the child was sitting in his wagon in front of the store, approximately 15 paces from the highway, waiting for another child who was inside the store, when struck by the car.
Died in Few Minutes
The automobile, Hayes said, which was said to have been operated by Mrs. Geneva Weaver, of Garden City, was approaching the store preparatory to stopping there. The driver, the officer said, apparently lost control of the car and crashed into the youth and his wagon, flinging him up on the porch.
The child, Dr. Kolmer said he believe, suffered the neck fracture at the time of the impact and died within a few minutes afterward.
An inquest was tentatively set for Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in Salem. No charges have been placed against the driver, pending outcome of the inquest, county authorities said.
Funeral services for the boy will be conducted today [23 May 1937] at 3 p.m. at the Garden City Baptist church. Burial will be in Fairview.
Pallbearers will be: W. B. Ridgeway, L. N. Quilliams, C. W. Meadow and J. W. Perdue.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Bush; two sisters, Alice Jernell and Christine; and two brothers, Louis and Johnnie, of Garden City.
