Early Life

Mary calls herself a 7 month baby and tells of her Catholic nurse taking her for a blessing so she would not die. Her mother created a warm place by the fire for her as an infant and she survived.

She had the recollection of going to Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and was given a cup that she did not keep.

She also went to the yearly Children's Fete. "They would sit us down on the grass and give each child a half pound of fruit cake. The cake was very delicious." Tea was also served with the cake. Mary said she was not raised to drink tea like all of the other children.

Her mother, Georgina, remarried a man, John Hughes. They called him Jack Curly Hughes. Mary did not care for him because he began to drink beer and "he was pretty mean to my mother". [5]

Mary sailed to the United States through Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1910 when she was 24 years old. Once in America, she boarded a train for Salt Lake City, Utah. "The train trip was ugly. It wasn't very nice. All the women were together and we had our own coach. At night we turned the seats down and all lay down together, then in the morning we would set the seats back up. We didn't have any pillows."

Family

Mary met John Wilford Steed while she was renting a room. "You could see through the seams outside and it was getting pretty cold. They had a man come down and line this room with muslin. His name was Wilford Steed. I got to know him and after a month I married him."

They lived with John Wilford's mother Ann Jenkins Steed. Mary said "she was one of the nicest ladies I ever knew."
