Mercedes Hortensia Bussi Sota (known as "Hortensia" and nicknamed "Tencha") was born in 1914 in Rencagua in central Chile. She studied at the University of Chile. She worked as a librarian at the National Statistics Office. She married Salvador Guillermo Allende in 1940.
When her husband became the President of Chile in 1970, she became the First Lady. Following the military coup in 1973 in which Salvador Allende died, she went into exile in Mexico. She returned to Chile in 1988.
She passed away in 2009 in Santiago, Chile, aged 94.
