Born in 4 Q 1861 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, the son of Robert Maltby Butcher (1821), a merchant, and Martha Ann (1830).

The 1871 census lists him as 9 years old, with his mother Martha Ann and some of his siblings[1]
In the 1881 census he is aged 19, living in his other's residence - 1 Avenue Road, Bexley. Occupation: Insurance Agent
On his marriage certificate he is listed as a florist in Bexham, Kent.
At age 22, his first marriage on Nov 22, 1883 to Alice Beatrice Crowe (25) at St Mary the Virgin, Bexley, Kent. She was the daughter of James Crowe, a clerk.
About 1886 the family moved to New Zealand.

WANGANUI, This Day
The death has occurred at the age of 72 years of Mr. George Girling-Butcher, a well-known ex-journalist. He was attached to the staffs of the London "Spectator," the "Daily Telegraph," and "The Times," and later was foreign correspondent for "The Times" at Paris, Venice, and St. Petersburg. When he came to the Dominion he joined the staff of the "Otago Daily Times," and subsequently was with the "Christchurch Press" and the "Nelson Colonist." He established the "Golden Bay Times," and was engaged in free-lance work at Wellington for some years. Abandoning journalism, he joined the Mines Department. He retired from the Public Service in 1913.
