Research Notes

The evidence that Hester's parents were Isaac and Rebecca Butcher consists of Hester's maiden name Butcher, burial in the same cemetery as Isaac Butcher, and an aunt-nephew relationship in the 1880 census. The 1880 census recorded a head of household named Isaac Caudle in Macoupin County, Illinois.[6] Hester was no longer living, but Isaac Caudle had appeared as one of her sons in the censuses of 1850 and 1860. The oldest member of Caudle's 1880 household was "Mila" Land, listed as Caudle's aunt. Mila Land, usually recorded as Emily Land, was Isaac Caudle's aunt by marriage. Emily was the widow of Fountain Land, who was a stepson of Isaac Butcher and biological son of Isaac's wife Rebecca. This serves as evidence that Caudle's mother Hester (Butcher) Caudle was Isaac Butcher's daughter. Rebecca Butcher, the mother of both Hester and Fountain Land, was last recorded in Macoupin County in 1860.

About Hester's place of birth, she indicated in the censuses of 1850 and 1860 that she was born in Tennessee. Her parents had indeed lived in Maury County, Tennessee before migrating to Illinois. But Isaac did nine land transactions in Madison County, Kentucky between 1810 and 1818, the period when Hester was born. His first record in Tennessee was in the census of 1820. So Hester is shown in this profile as born in Madison, Kentucky but with place of birth as uncertain. Samples-1044 23:41, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
