Biography

Birth

Agnes Butcher was born on the 9th of May 1879 in Baston, Lincoln, England. [1] Her mother was Mary Ann (Butcher) Tilford (abt.1859-1945). [2]Father is unknown, but her middle name "Pratt" may hold a clue to her paternal roots. Agnes's maternal grandmother, Mary Butcher, raised her.[3]

Marriage

Agnes married Walter Lindley Allen (1877-1980) on August 8th, 1901 in Leicester, Leicestershire England. Walter married Agnes Butcher by "banns". The marriage is registered on Aug. 08, 1901 in St. Peter's Church (Church of England) in Leicester England. Leicester is about one hundred miles north of London and a few miles west of Peterborough. Walter's occupation was a "platelayer". His age was given as 23 and was listed as a bachelor. Agnes Butcher was a spinster. Walter's father was William Allen and Agnes Butcher's father is shown as James William Tilford (probably her step father). Witnesses were James William Tilford and Hannah Maude Allen (probably Walter's sister) [4]

Children

Agnes had one daughter, Mary Ann (Butcher) Pitt (1897-1987), in 1897, 4 years before she married Walter. DNA evidence points to Walter or someone else in the Alllen family as the father of Mary. Agnes and Walter had six more children, 4 girls and 2 boys.

  1. Edith
  2. Maude
  3. Mable
  4. Phyllis
  5. Frank
  6. Walter Russell Allen (1915-2012)

Emigration

After their marriage and the birth of two daughters they moved in 1907 from England to Toronto Ontario Canada . Walter worked for The Grand Trunk Railroad as a baggage handler. They moved to BeachvilleOntario about 1915 and Walter worked in a quarry until he enlisted in the army. He served from about 1916 to 1919. Agnes apparently headed the household in Beachville until Walter's discharge and they settled in Woodstock.

Death

Agnes passed away on the 8th of September 1943 in Woodstock, Ontario. [5] She is buried in Woodstock Anglican Cemetery.
