Biography

Joseph Butler was born 14 May 1763 to Amon Butler and Elizabeth (Hawkins) Butler. [1]

He married Sarah Lane 29 July 1783 in Baltimore, Maryland at Saint Paul's Parish. [2]

His son, Absalom, was born in 1789.

Numerous "Ancestry" trees give Joseph's date of death as 1791. However, the "Harrison Butler Biography" states Joseph had 18 children, which implies he would have lived much longer.

Note: by relative immersed in Butler history for 2 generations (Edna Sarah & her Daughter NRG - Sarah Butler Brackin was Edna's grandmother & lived a mile away) The Harrison Butler that died in 1891 & is presented in the 1891 "Portrait and Biographical Album of Fayette County Iowa" [3] appears to have been written by someone not that well acquainted with the Butler family before 1850 .... it is quite flawed.
The grandfather of Harrison that is supposed to have had 18 children [THIS Joseph] actually DIED after his first and only son was born. His wife died first, then he did, leaving baby Absalom Butler to be raised by relatives! He was raised by his Uncle Nick (father to his cousin/ like brother where BOTH those boys, Harrison & Absalom were early pioneers in West Union IOWA.
Another note: Scots/Irish often name the first son after the paternal grandfather, so when someone has 5 sons .... there are OFTEN many people with the same names in the same families & same ages.... Then they also name children after favorite siblings! VERY MESSY.

Further research needed.

Research Notes

Joseph had a brother named Absalom born in 1758, who apparently had a son named Absalom, close to the same age as Joseph's son. Is it possible these two persons -- who would be first cousins -- are in fact one? First impression is, they are not the same person. Sources needed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
