Biography

Mary (Butler) Randall was a convict on the Second Fleet.

Mary's date of birth is unknown. She passed away in 1802.

Mary (Butler) Randall has Irish ancestors.

Mary Butler was Transported to the New South Wales Penal Colony on the Neptune as part of the Second Fleet. She and another Irish woman, Mary Desmond, had been sentenced in September 1789 in the Old Bailey in London (Middlesex Gaol Delivery) to Transportation for 7 years for stealing “a basket of French beans", the property of Daniel Read at Covent Garden fruit-and-vegetable market. The Old Bailey trial can be seen here.[1]

On 5 September 1790, Mary Butler married John Randall at St. John's Church Parramatta 'by Permission of His Excellency Arthur Phillip Esq Governor'. Witnesses were Edward Smith and John Dawson.[2]

Mary had children:

  • Lydia (1790-1793)
  • Mary b.1793, married John Martin [Alexander 1788] in 1812.
  • Frances (abt.1796-1870)
  • John Randall Jr b.1797, worked as a seaman on coastal ships and may have died in 1830.

Mary Randall "of the parish of Parramatta" was buried on 29 July 1802 in St John's Cemetery, Parramatta.[3]
