Joseph Henry Butler was born in the second quarter of 1890 in Auckland. [1] He was third child and first son of Joseph Heber Butler and Eliza Henson. His childhood would have been spent in Ponsonby and Newton.
He should not be confused with his grandfather of the same name.
Joseph trained as a tailor and at various times in his life his occupation is given as tailor's assistant, cutter (frequently misspelt as cutler in the electoral roll) and tailor. He lived with his family at 11 Royal Tce, Sandringham until his marriage. [2]
Joseph moved to Wellington. When called up on 19 October 1915 he was living at 22 Boyd Terrace Newtown Wellington and working as a tailor for Roberts Ltd, Jervios Quay. Joseph served with the NZ Field Artillery as a driver. His height was 5ft 10in and weight 10 stone. His hair was black, eyes hazel He arrived in France on 25 April 1916. On 22 February 1917 he was hospitalised for bronchitis and syphilis. He was in London from March 1917 and on 23 July 1917 sailed for New Zealand on s.s. Ionic. His discharge papers say he performed no military duties after 24 January 1918. [3]
In 1918 Joseph married Lui Jeannett Merideth [4] . Lui's name after marriage almost always appears as Louisa Butler. Initially they made there home at 10 Maidstone St, Grey Lynn [5]

Lousia died in 1972 [11]. and Joseph died in 1975 [12]. They are not believed to have had any children.
