Biography

William Butler was born at. or near Dublin, Ireland, about July 1743,[1] said the son of James Butler and his wife, whose name is not known. William died in Harmonsburg, Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, 4 March 1839.[2][3]

William married, probably Indiana County, Pennsylvania, about 1810, Eleanor Douglas.

According to The Butlers in America in about 1760, during the French and Indian War, William was "pressed" in to service in the British Navy and brought to America. Upon landing, he deserted and made his way to his uncle Thomas' home.

Research Notes

Birth No Irish contemporaneous record of his birth has been found, nor has any similar record that would memorialize the name of his father. William's date of birth was probably calculated from his pension file. "In May, 1823, he stated his age as eighty years in July next, making his birth in July 1743."[5]

Prior Version. A prior version of this profile reported his birth location as Cookeny Parish, County Wicklow, Ireland, but The Butlers in America specifies his birth birth location as "with in two miles of Dublin."

William Butler is not the son of James Butler (1718-1768) because James died without issue.

As we have discussed separately, the only reason William is "not" the son of James Butler-874 is that well meaning WikiTreers have morphed Butler-874 into a completely different person.

Cross posting below parts of the comment now posted to Butler-874.

Have taken the time to review some pretty drastic changes to dear James' profile.
The original intent of Butler-874 identified the father of several children and the older brother of several siblings, including Thomas Butler (1720-1764). James' identity was largely based on William David Butler, John Cromwell Butler and Joseph Marion Butler, The Butler Family in America (St. Louis, Mo., Shallcross Printing Co., [1909]), 4, but especially 6-9 and 16-17; digital images, FamilySearch, a link that often breaks, so this is also available via FamilySearch Catalog, FSL film 1401442, digital collection 8923197, images 11-12 (for pages 6-9), and images 17-18 (pages 16-19).
Changes to the profile in 2021 confused him as someone else ... we now have several younger siblings missing their older brother, and five fatherless Butler children who have lost ties to their mostly Pennsylvania and better known relatives.
Hope to collaborate about this, but shouldn't Butler-874 be restored as the children's father, likewise as to the other identifying characteristics and associations. Ala, may James regain his originally intended identity?

Edited to add: My notes ... Some Butler Research Notes, and to add alternative links to the source.
