William Butler was born at. or near Dublin, Ireland, about July 1743,[1] said the son of James Butler and his wife, whose name is not known. William died in Harmonsburg, Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, 4 March 1839.[2][3]
William married, probably Indiana County, Pennsylvania, about 1810, Eleanor Douglas.
According to The Butlers in America in about 1760, during the French and Indian War, William was "pressed" in to service in the British Navy and brought to America. Upon landing, he deserted and made his way to his uncle Thomas' home.
William /Butler is DAR Ancestor #: A017738. His Spouse: Eleanor Douglas. Children in patriot file: William who m. Elizabeth McMurtry; James who m. Martha Clarke; John Douglas who m. Elizabeth Hobbs. [4]
William and Eleanor (Crawford) Butler were the parents of several children; eight (8) children are named in The Butlers in America,
Birth No Irish contemporaneous record of his birth has been found, nor has any similar record that would memorialize the name of his father. William's date of birth was probably calculated from his pension file. "In May, 1823, he stated his age as eighty years in July next, making his birth in July 1743."[5]
Prior Version. A prior version of this profile reported his birth location as Cookeny Parish, County Wicklow, Ireland, but The Butlers in America specifies his birth birth location as "with in two miles of Dublin."
