James served in the Civil War, Company G, 12th Iowa Regiment from 1861 to 1864, according to information in his obituary. [1] Military source cites Company B.
"He moved from Iowa to Kansas in 1872, when he homesteaded on a claim in Jewell County, Kansas, and after many successful years on a farm, retired from active work, moving to the city of Formoso in the same county as his farm. At this place he made his home up to the time of his death."[1]
James is the landlord of a hotel in the town of Courtland. His daughter Addie is part of the household.
In 1900 Barbara is cited in Grant Township, with her daughter Minnie Butler and nephew Edward Worth. [11]
James passed away September 27th 1919, while visiting family in Nebraska. He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Floyd County, Iowa. [1]
