Biography

James M. Butler was born in April 1848[1] to Jackson and Mary Butler of Indiana, USA.

On September 6, 1850, James was two years old and living with his parents and three older siblings - Alex (9), Shubale (6) and William (4) - in Deer Creek, Indiana.[2]

James enlisted in the Union Army on September 15, 1864, at Osawatomie, Miami County, Kansas.[3] He mustered into Company L, Kansas 16th Cavalry Regiment on 01 Oct 1864, and mustered out on 13 May 1865 at Leavenworth, KS.[3]

In June of 1870, James was 22 years old and working as a farm laborer in Walnut Township, Butler County, Kansas.[4]

In 1874, James married Mary "Mollie" Katherine Reed in Lyon County, Kansas.[1] They would have eight known children:

2. Oliver Jackson (1877-1963)
3. Bessie E. (1879-1968)
4. Mary G. (1882-1976)
5. Lloyd Daniel (1884-1975)
6. Elsie Ann (1889-1956)
7. Helen B. (1891-1973)
8. Archie Dean (1893-1949)

In 1880, James (35) and Mollie (25) were living on Fourth Street in Madison, Kansas, with their three children - Susan (5), Oliver (2) and Bessie (10 months).[5]

On March 1, 1895, James (47) and Mollie (40) were living in Madison, Greenwood County, Kansas, with their children Bernice (20), Oliver (17), Bessie (14), Mary (12), Lloyd (10, Elsie (6), Helen (3) and Archie (1).[6]

On June 14, 1900, James and Mollie were living in Madison, Kansas, with their children Oliver (22), Bessie (20), Mary (18), Lloyd (15), Elsie (11), Helen (9) and Archie (6).[1]

On March 1, 1905, James (57) and Mollie (50) were living with their children Lloyd (20), Elsie (16) and Archie (12), plus Mollie's mother Susanna Reed (83).[7]

In 1910, James and Mollie were living with son Archie (16) and Mollie's mother, Susanne (Eakle) Reed, on Garfield Avenue in Madison, Kansas.[8]

In 1915, James (67) and Mollie (60) lived in Madison, Greenwood County, Kansas, with their son Archie (20) and a couple of lodgers.[9]

In 1920, James (71) and Mollie (64), who now called herself Kate, were empty nesters living in Madison, Kansas.[10]

In 1930, James and Kate, who now called herself Mary once again, were living in Los Angeles, California.[11]

James died at age 83 on February 17, 1932, in Los Angeles, California.[12]
