Patrick was born in 1854 in Newfoundland, Canada. His parents were Irish but their families had removed to England. . John Butler and Anastasia Burnett. [1]
John was from England according to Patrick’s death certificate, which listed Patrick’s mother, Anastasia Burnett, as born in Leatland. Leat is a section of St. Cleer’s in Cornwall.
Patrick was baptized March 6, 1854. [2]
As a young man he worked on whaling ships out of Saint John, Newfoundland. He then moved to Dundee, Scotland where he married Julia Brady, also Irish.
Bride was the second daughter of Francis Brady of Dundee. Groom was Patrick Butler, seaman. Rev. Godden was the parish priest.[3]
He and Julia had three children in Dundee. They emigrated to New York City about 1890 and lived on the lower east side of Manhattan on Cherry Street. Julia died in or before 1896.
Patrick then married Helen (Joyce) Butler, Aug 1896 in Manhattan New York. She was from from Ireland. [4] They had 8 children including Anastasia, Mary, Frederick and Mabel.
He had a tobacco shop, then he worked for the city. He and Helen had eight children. He was listed as living in Brooklyn in 1920.
