Biography

If she existed, Lucy Butler was most likely born in about 1745 in Virginia. Her origins are unknown.

She is said to have married Daniel Hicks around 1764 in Charlotte County, Virginia. The Butlers came from Culpeper County, Virginia and were neighbors of the Hicks' on Sandy Creek in Charlotte County. This group started migrating down to Troy, in Montgomery County, North Carolina in the late 1760s. Daniel and Lucy's oldest children, including Littleberry, William and Robert, were reportedly born in Charlotte County. Son Joshua was reportedly born in North Carolina after the family had moved down to Montgomery County, shortly before the Revolutionary War. The family was reportedly there before 1773. The Butler Family had reportedly moved there several years earlier. Daniel reportedly bought land at Dick's Creek near [southeast of] present day Star, [Montgomery County], North Carolina. His land adjoins what is now a days the county airport [Montgomery County Airport]."

Various researchers identify the children of Daniel and Lucy to include:

  1. Littleberry "Berry" Hicks (1765–1839) born Wylliesburg, Charlotte County, Virginia
  2. William B Hicks (1767–1840) born Wylliesburg, Charlotte County, Virginia
  3. Robert Vernon Hicks (1770–1853) born Wylliesburg, Charlotte County, Virginia
  4. John Hicks (1771–1860)
  5. Daniel Hicks, Jr. (1771– )
  6. Joshua Hicks (1772– ) born in North Carolina after the family moved down to Montgomery County, North Carolina shortly before the Revolutionary War.
  7. Joel Hicks (1774–1855)
  8. John Hicks Sr (1774–1858)
  9. Taylor Hicks (1774–1858 )
  10. Reuben Hicks (1774– )
  11. Susannah Hicks (1775– )
  12. Ezekiel Hicks (1787– )

She reportedly in 1805 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. T

Disputed Parents

Lucy's origins are currently unknown. She is identified without source by onamed Lucy, and there is no reason to believe that the Lucy Butler who married Daniel Hicks on the southwestern Virginia frontier in the 1760s was born in Connecticut.

Not Lucy Butler Sage of Connecticut

Some researchers also give her a middle name of "Sage," and some claim that she was born in Connecticut, but this appears to be a conflation with a Lucy Butler who was born in 1736 in Connecticut. That Lucy, whose mother's maiden name appears to have been Thankful Sage, died and was buried in Connecticut in 1783. Her husband was Elijah Wright, and this is not the same Lucy Butler. See FAG memorial 59241777).

Possible Clue

Lucy's son, Littleberry, married Agnes Jordan. Agnes's brother, John Jordan (Jordan-10477) was married three times. One of his wives was Mary Butler, daughter of Thomas and Mary Butler, and widow of Reuben Butler. Mary named one of her daughters Lucy. Maybe Mary also had a sister or aunt named Lucy who fits this profile?

Estimated Birth Date

Birth year is a rough estimate based on age of first children and marriage year of 1764 cited in Rootsweb entry.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lucy by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lucy:

Lucy's son, Littleberry, married Agnes Jordan. Agnes's brother, John Jordan (Jordan-10477) was married three times. One of his wives was Mary Butler, daughter of Thomas and Mary Butler, and widow of Reuben Butler. Mary named one of her daughters Lucy. Maybe Mary also had a sister or aunt named Lucy who fits this profile?

Butler-30089 and Butler-16841 appear to represent the same person because: Death dates match as well as spouse, Daniel Hicks

I wonder if this is the same Lucy "Virginia Births and Christenings, 1584-1917", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRP2-YG8 : 28 January 2020), Lucy Butler, 1745.

The names and estimated birth date definitely match, so this is a great lead and worth exploring. The one caveat is that Surrey is a tidewater county, so it would be a relatively unusual migration pattern. The unsourced material in the Rootsweb profiles says the Butlers came from Culpeper County, which would be a more common migration pattern but so far I have not been able to find any tax lists or similar records in Culpeper County that go back to the 1740s to try to test this theory.

Scott I'm in favor of removing lucy Sage Butler and ancestors from tree, Thank you for your efforts. I also want to mention seeing notations of a Lucy Butler from a family in Culpeper, VA area. Any chance of that in your findings?

I have not seen that but it definitely sounds like it is worth exploring. Do you recall where you saw that reference?

I just realized I never got around to making the edit to the parents -- will do so now. I have not made any progress yet on trying to identify the correct parents in Virginia, but it is still on the to-do list!

It seems unlikely that the Lucy Butler born in Connecticut was the same Lucy Butler who is said to have married Daniel Hicks in Virginia. What is the original source of this data?

You are right that it is unlikely, I just believed a relative of mine about her. I guess the Sage middle name through me and I continue to look for a connection. Thank you Scott for pointing this out.

Yes, many Ancestry trees include these claims but most cite no sources and ones that do cite sources appear to conflate a Lucy Butler in Connecticut with the Butlers in Virginia/North Carolina. I think the 1736 birth date and the Sage middle name both relate to the Connecticut Lucy and are incorrect. The Rootsweb researchers say the Lucy Butler who married Daniel Hicks was the daughter of John Butler, that she was born in Virginia, and that she and Daniel were married in ~1764, which fits given the birth of their oldest child Littleberry in ~1765. If Lucy Butler was born in 1736, she would have been 28 in 1764. Not impossible but very unusual for a woman's first marriage at that place and time. There are records showing the Connecticut Lucy was born in 1736, which is probably where this date came from. There are also records indicating that the Connecticut Lucy's mother's name was Thankful Sage, explaining where the Sage middle name likely came from. Those same records show that Connecticut Lucy's father as Benjamin Butler and her husband as Elijah Wright, and Lucy (Butler) Wright lived her whole life in Connecticut and died there in 1783 (see gravestone image on Find a Grave memorial 59241777). So that is clearly not our Lucy. Unless you object, I'd like to clean this profile up by stripping it down to what we can reliably assume is connected to Lucy Butler, likely daughter of John Butler.
