Move from Illinois to Wisconsin Territory
They moved from Vermilion County, Illinois to Green County, Wisconsin Territory in 1839.[11][12] Green County was created in 1837 from the Wisconsin Territory.[13][14]
Move from Wisconsin to Iowa
In late 1850 [16]
or 1851, the Butlers left for Iowa where Nicholas Butler farmed 100 acres in sections 11 and 12 in West Union Township, a few miles NE of the town of West Union.[17]
West Union Township (now Union Township), Fayette, Iowa - Sections 1, 2, 11, 12.
The township was named West Union by order of the Clayton Commissioners 3 October 1849. (p 344).[18] The present day name is Union Township; the county seat is in the town of West Union.[19]

1862-1865 War of the Rebellion
Name: Jesse Butler[20]
Rank: Private
Enlisted: 15 August 1862
Mustered in: 6 September 1862
Regiment: Company A, Iowa 38th Infantry Regiment
Transferred: 1 January 1865

Jesse Butler and his younger brother, Henry Butler, joined the War of the Rebellion in August 1862 and they remained
together until Henry's illness and death in 1865.
Iowa's Martyr Regiment
By the end of 1864 "the losses of the 38th were as follows:
deaths from battle, 1; deaths from disease, 314; wounded, 2;
discharged, 117." Having lost more men to disease then any
other regiment, without ever fighting in a major battle, the 38th
came to be known as Iowa's Martyr Regiment. [21]
On 1 January 1865, the 38th was consolidated with the 34th Infantry
and officially designated as the 34th Regiment of Iowa Infantry
Volunteers. On that date, Henry and Jesse were mustered out of the 38th and into Company F of the 34th.[21]
Henry did not survive the war; brother Jesse mustered out with the
regiment in Houston, Texas, on 15 August 1865.[21]
1863 Will of Grandmother Blunt
In the 1863 will of their grandmother Roxanna Blunt, the Butler children who received their deceased mother's share of the estate were: Roxena Smith, Achsah Cullins, Jesse Butler, Mary Ellen Smith, and Abey Cullins; also, the minor children, Henry, Nicholas III, and Jacob Butler named as heirs at law with father Nicholas Butler Jr. named as guardian. The probate papers do not mention the youngest child, Barton Butler, age 10. [22]
Death of wife Nancy
It is assumed that Nancy A. Butler died after the 1860 census[5] and before the 1870 census.[5]No death record found. They had no children.
