James Butler of Doon, the eldest son, was sent to France in 1695 with one of the “Flights of the Wild Geese” for his education. While still in his teens `he joined the Irish Brigade as an officer of the famous Clare’s Dragoons, in which he fought at Ramillies and Malplaquet.
He married Mary O'Shaughnessy.
