John Butler was the son of James Butler, 2nd/12th Baron Dunboyne and Margaret FitzPatrick.[1]
John married his mother's cousin Joan FitzPatrick (died bef. 1597), daughter of Florence FitzPatrick, 3rd Baron of Upper Ossory and Catherine O'More (daughter of Patrick O'More of Abbeyleix, who was the younger son of Connell m'Melaghlin O'More, Lord of Leix).
John & Joan had one son: Edmund Butler, 3rd/13th Baron Dunboyne.
John died on 7 January 1602, slain by Richard Grace[2] "as a result of a longstanding feud between the Graces and John Butler's mother's family, the Fitzpatricks, which had been going on since the 1570s." The Dunboynes and the FitzPatricks were generally loyal to the English Crown starting from the 1570s.[3]
After John's murder, his next brother Pierce tried (unsuccessfully) to become heir to the Dunboyne title by having John's son Edmund declared illegitimate. Details on the profile for Pierce Butler.
