Richard Edmund "Dick" Butler was born on 25 March 1926 in Black Rock, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, the son of Florence Margaret (Harrick) Butler and Claude Butler.[1]
Dick married Patricia Carmel Kelly in 1951 in Victoria.[2] Their children were:[1]
Dick was a career Australian public servant, and from 1968 to 1989 he was the highest-ranked Australian in the United Nations system, in the International Telecommunication Union. He was elected Deputy Secretary-General of the Union in 1968, and Secretary-General in 1982, serving in the top role until 1989.[1][3][4]
Dick died on 23 June 2012 at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Melbourne, aged 86 years.[1]
