Birth: Matthew Charles Butler was born on 5 April 1823, and baptised on 18 July 1824 at St Mary the Virgin, Chatham, Kent, England. His parents, fisherman Charles Butler and his wife Mary, were said to be living in Chatham at that time.[1]
The family seem to have moved to Milton next Gravesend shortly after this, as his younger siblings, Elizabeth Mary[2] and Arthur William,[3] were baptised there in 1825 and 1827 respectively. Their father was still a fisherman.
The 1841 census recorded Matthew's mother and younger siblings still living in Milton, Gravesend[4] but Matthew, who would have been about 17, and his father are missing. Given their occupations, it's likely they were working at sea when the census was taken.
Marriage: Matthew married Catharine Warrington at St Botolph, Northfleet on 20 Dec 1845. Both were said to be living in the parish, and both Matthew and his father-in-law gave their occupation as waterman. Matthew's own father was a mariner on this occasion and, unusually, Catharine's occupation was also recorded: she was a bonnet maker. The marriage was registered in North Aylesford district.[5]
Parish register: 20 Dec 1845, St Botolph, Northfleet,
Groom: Matthew Charles Butler, 22, bachelor, Northfleet, waterman
All the children were born in the district of Gravesend, with the family initially living in the parish of St George, which covered the western part of the town, before moving to Edwin Street in the eastern parish of Milton next Gravesend in the mid-1850s.[12]
Matthew's occupation was recorded as waterman at the baptisms of his first two children, but the 1851 census records that he was in fact by then qualified as a Master Mariner. From September of 1857 onwards, he gave his occupation as Pilot.

Matthew himself was presumably working at sea when the 1871 census was taken but his wife and younger children were recorded still living in Milton.

Widowed: Matthew's wife Catherine died aged 52 in 1874.[23] She was buried in Gravesend St George, but the parish register noted that she had lived at Queen Street, in the parish of Milton.[24]
Matthew's whereabouts after this are uncertain. He appears to be missing from both the 1881 and 1891 England census returns, and his burial record seems to indicate that he had been living in Antwerp, in the Flemish part of Belgium at the end of his life.
Burial: Matthew Charles Butler died aged 75 in 1898. He was buried in Gravesend, Kent on 26 September, but the parish register recorded his abode as Geckeren (sic) Antwerp.[25]
Research Notes
Burial record: Geckeren is probably Ekeren, a neighbourhood of Antwerp which appears to be close to the river and docks. He presumably died there, as there is no English death registration.
1841 census return for mother and siblings is ambiguous - ages are all too young, but family group makes sense as a whole.
