David was baptised in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire on 19 January 1845, the son of James and Susan Butler. [2]
The Butler family were living in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England when the 1841 census was taken. Head of the household James was age 25, his wife Susanna was 30 and they had children James Butler age 3, David Butler age 1, Charlotte Barns age 15, Ruth Barns age 12 and Richard Barns age 9. [3]
By 1851, David's mother Susan had died, and he was living with his father and siblings in Woollards Lane, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire. James was age 37, and an ag lab, and he had children David age 11, Job age 9 and Samuel age 3. They were living with James's step daughter Ruth, now married to William Scarr, their children Susan and Henry and her brother Richard Barnes, a coal porter. [4]
