Biography

Albert was born in 1876 in Somerset, England, the son of Elisha Butt and his wife Emily Matthews. In the 1881 Census he is living with his parents and 2 younger siblings in Penselwood, Somerset where his father gave his occupation as carpenter and wheelwright.[1]

Albert was a carpenter and joiner by trade. He served his apprenticeship with his father and subsequently worked in the trade in London.

In the 1891 Census he is living with his parents and 4 younger siblings in Penselwood, Somerset. He is an apprentice carpenter.[2]

He married to Beatrice Annie Bailey at Thornton Heath, Surrey on 02 Jun 1900.[3] There were at least 4 children. In 1901 he and Beatrice are living with her father in Croydon.He gave his place of birth on the Census as Charlton, Somerset.[4]

In 1911 he and Beatrice and their 4 living children (1 had died) are living at North Croydon in London.[5]

He and his family migrated to Melbourne, Victoria Australia in about 1912 and he worked for T.S. Gill, shopfitter in Melbourne until Nov 1916. He then commenced work on shop fitting for Brook, Robinson & Co.

On 14 Jun 1917 he applied to become an Australian Munitions Worker under a joint Australian government/British government scheme to supply skilled workers for War work in the UK. At the time he was married with 4 children and living in St Kilda. He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 02 Aug 1917. Albert was issued with Australian Munitions Worker Badge No. 2110 and embarked on the SS "Anchises" from Sydney on 08 Aug 1917, disembarking in Liverpool, England on 02 Oct 1917.

On 12 Oct 1917 Albert commenced work for Messrs McAlpine & Sons, with the British Expeditionary Forces in France as a joiner. He returned from France around Aug 1918 and commenced work with Messrs. P.&W. Anderson at Feltwell Aerodrome in Norfolk. He left there in Mar 1919 due to a dispute between the workers and timekeepers. Owing to that contract almost expired no action was taken. He was scheduled to commence work at Epson, but this didn't eventuate. He was unemployed for a period awaiting repatriation to Australia.

Albert returned to Australia on SS "Bahia Castillo", departing Devonport, England on 18 Jul 1919, disembarking in Port Melbourne on 16 Oct 1919. His agreement was terminated the same day as complete.

He returned to his home in St Kilda. He and Beatrice continued to live in St Kilda until after 1942.[6]

He died in Melbourne, Victoria in 1948.
