Biography

Flag of Devon (adopted 2003)
Mary (Butt) Thomas was born in Devon, England.

Mary Butt was born in around 1763 in Devon, England.

She married Thomas Meddleton (also spelt Middleton) on the 24th of May 1789 at St Thomas in Exeter, Devon, England[1]. The ceremony was witnessed by James Warren and George Collander. They had two children, both daughters:

  • Rebecca Middleton, baptised on the 7th of October 1789 in St Thomas.
  • Susanna Middleton, baptised on the 5th of September 1794 in St Thomas.

As their first child was baptised only around 4 months after they were married, it is likely that Thomas and Mary were wed due to the fact Mary was pregnant.

Mary, now a widow, married William Thomas, a widower, on the 14th of June 1804 at St Thomas' in Exeter, Devon, England[2]. Banns were published in Ide (William's parish) and St Thomas (Mary's parish) on the 13th, 20th, and 27th of May 1804[3][4]. They had 3 children together:

On the baptism record of her last child, Richard, the family's residence was listed as Cowic[k] Street.

Mary's husband, William, died in 1832, at which time his abode was listed as being on Ide Road.

At the 1841 Census[5], Mary lived on Dunsford Road in St Thomas with John Butt, likely a relative of hers. John was a sawyer.

Name Sex Age Occupation Birth Place

Mary passed away in 1847 in St Thomas at the age of 84[6]. She was buried on the 28th of March 1847 in St Thomas[7]. Her abode had been on Cowick Street.

Research Notes

Mary's GRO death record has her age at death as 84, giving a birth year of around 1763. The 1841 census confirms was born in Devon.

On her daughter, Susanna's, baptism record, Mary's name is mistakenly written as Martha.
