Biography

Based on his age at death, 92, he was born about 1727 perhaps in Carbonear where the Butt family had lived since the late 1600s (Colonial Office 1, Census records) . William Butt likely arrived in Broad Cove at about age 23 when he cleared land there in 1750: 50 yds from E. to W. bounded on the E. by William King on the W. by Morgan Hingay 175 yds. from H.W.M. to the Northward bounded on the N. by the Commons that had 1 Stage, 1 Flake, 3 Houses, 1 Garden 1 Meadow by 1805. He cleared a second plot in 1776: A Plot 81 yds. from E. to W. 92 yds. from S. to N. bounded N. by the Brook Note: There is 47 yds. of flake bounded by the waterside in dispute between Wm. Butt and Morgan Hingay. By 1805 the second plot was leased by Dennis Dunn (Plantation Book). William He died in Broad Cove at age 92.
